NYU housing likes me better than you
I constantly hear stories about how hundreds of kids get fucked over by NYU housing every year. They get something too expensive. They get something too far away. They get something too small. They get separated from their friends. They get shitty roommates and can’t switch rooms.
As I stand before you (aka sit behind my computer), I swear to you that NYU housing is not the devil. In fact, they have been quite good to me - and I mean every year, not just Sophomore year when I got first pick.
Of course, I have had the worst roommates on the history of the entire earth each year, but that’s not NYU housing’s fault. Technically.
Freshman year, I got the dorm in the middle of campus that was close to everything.
Sophomore year, I got a single bedroom in a 3-bedroom suite in the building I wanted on Union Square.
Junior year, even though I made a bad decision regarding my choice of roommate, we got a huge ground-level studio in the dorm we wanted uptown.
This year, I thought I was going to be fucked. I knew I wanted a single again due to my horrible history with roommates. I would’ve preferred my own studio, but I knew I’d probably still have to share a suite with other people. Well, when it came time for my housing pick, the only singles left were the REALLY REALLY FUCKING EXPENSIVE ones - we’re talking over $17,000 for two semesters. Well, since I was so desperate for a single, I took one. BUT, then I immediately submitted a Room Change Request Form to the housing office online, stating that I still wanted only a single, but that if anything cheaper came up, I would prefer it, that I didn’t care which building it was in.
I got an e-mail two days ago saying my request had been honored, and it listed the room number, but no details about the room. So I had to wait until today to call the housing office to see what was up.
Get this: I got a LOW COST (less than $11,000 - the cheapest NYU offers) SINGLE BEDROOM at Water Street - which is by the WATER and the Seaport. There will be two people in the bedroom next to me, but I don’t care. I get nice hardwood floors, a microwave, full fridge, plenty of counter space, and practically my own bathroom (since the other bedroom has one inside it).
You know what this means? Lots of naked DDR sessions behind a locked door.
