If you’re going to protest, do it right.

You know, I hate that NYU is so expensive. And yeah, I do wonder how all that money is spent, since NYU does not disclose their budget. But I signed up for this willingly, turning down free rides, like so many other students. Maybe I’m the stupid one, but the protest that happened here the past couple of days was ridiculous.

Take Back NYU

Fortunately, I didn’t see anyone I knew in any of the pictures. I would’ve been embarrassed for them. Although, I think the police spraying mace at the crowds might have been a tad inappropriate as well. Read the whole story here.

There’s also a YouTube video somewhere of guards and police hitting kids with nightsticks. Really? You’re going to beat unarmed young adults for breaking and entering… a CAFETERIA? Ugh. This whole thing just shouldn’t have happened.

Yes. Yes that shit was ridiculous. I understand that students are often overlooked by their schools, and I support the idea of unions for grad students (Canada has them!), as well as affordable education for all…but this was the stupidest way to go about it. Obviously acting immature did nothing for their cause.

Have you ever heard of following police orders? Fail to do so and force will be used, particularly if you continue to come at a police officer when he yells at you to stay back. It’s a) for his own personal safety and b) to implement the lawful order. If force isn’t used, everybody will do as they please. It’s a pretty simple concept, and is the way law and order has been maintained throughout history. I am not sure why you feel sorry for these morons for placing themselves in positions to be hit by nightsticks. If they had followed the commands and walked away, they would have been fine.

Since “Realist” didn’t leave a real e-mail, I can’t reply to him directly. I don’t feel like anywhere in that post do I express sorrow for these students, because I agree that they were acting stupidly. But I am the kind of person that views violence as a last resort, and these kids were not trying to burn down the building or steal or purposefully hurt anybody physically. They were trying to occupy a cafeteria. So to me, beating them for it seems like going a little too far.
